Not for the first time, though, again yesterday night i saw an accident.

The reason - Sharp white light used as head lights in a santro which totally blinded the driver of a Punto.

Is it legal to use white light as head lamps?

what i see is that its becoming a trend in delhi to modify your car & first thing to get is Jet black, 100% opaque sun films & now sharp white light.

i believe, its too dangerous & very disturbing

I would request all my friends in Car Wale atleast not to use it.

The so called white light would be usually an improperly installed/focussed HID beam. This will not have a proper beam pattern on the road and will throw light everywhere, except onto the road, like trees, other cars, etc. The kit comes at around 2k-3k with no approval or technically sound design.

CMVR or related governing bodies prescribe a colour of yellowish white as legal for headlamps, with a max wattage of 60 watt for each beam for LTVs and 75 watt for HCVs. Anything above is considered illegal. Moreover, one must never use High beam in traffic or when there is an opposite car approaching. This is proper road sense. And I would trust every literate for not using it.

Low beam, no matter the wattage, will never create glare to oncoming vehicles if the prescribed type of lamp is used where it has to be. Low beam of any car has a disctict and well noticeable \__\__ pattern whose cutoff must never beam higher than the road ahead. This is why the headlamp leveller is provided, that is to maintain the low beam on the road when the vehicle is loaded from behind etc. Still, we see some idiots who get their low beams raised up and upon that, use high beams. They create hazards for both the oncoming driver and themselves.

What can be done from our side is to follow these rules ourselves and also educate others regarding the same, and I feel by word of mouth, people will learn such things and the situation might improve.

I guess white light is illegal in India.

But propar road sense means using low beam when vehicle is coming from opposite direction, doesnt matter if light is blue, white or yellow. Paralel beam directly targets eyes of oppsite car driver.

Temporary Blindness is due to reflex to intensive light, so aparture of eye is made smaller when instantly high intensity light is seen. But when vehicle pases by, it takes few seconds to eye to again adapt to darker scene ahead which needs bigger amount of rays to pass thru lens for better clarity. It takes around 4 - 10 seconds depending on how intense was the paralell beam. More powerful the beam, more time it takes to adapt again to darker surroundings.

Dosnt matter who s coming opposite side, whether its truck drive or cyclist, use low beam to avoid accident. In case of bigger vehicles approaching then using lower beam may save even your life by avoiding distaction of truck / bus drive.

Some times, many drivers dont have this driving sense. In that case, alternatively flash high and low beam to signal opposite driver that you are annoyed by his high beam. This gives good feed back many times. But first start practising by yourself to use low beam.

Driving is privilage, not a right.
