Not much help to my speculation about nitrogen molecule size, but other than that pretty much supports my line of thought... So, Sharmaji was correct after all!!! Nitrogen is mostly hot air... Well 78% percent of hot air Wink

@Krishna, I may not be able to discuss academically, as I do not have the technical know-how.  I have given details of my observations, as experienced during my experiment with Nitrogen.

As already discussed/stated before, there’s no apparent difference in the ride-quality & handling or steering-feel of the car – except in some driving/road conditions (if observed minutely).  Mileage too is the same in all driving conditions (city & highway) – there’s no change in the mileage derived by me (4 mths / 5K kms).

However, the tyre temperature on long drive increases at lesser degree – have measured/felt the same in crude way – as compared to air-filled tyres.  Besides, there is a substantial difference in frequency of topping of PSI – have done only once (1 PSI each) after 3 months (last month).

Regarding the effect on longevity of tyre life, it is said that due to reduction in hot-cold cycle no vapor formation is there – leading to benefits like reductions in wheel corrosion & rubber deterioration.  This, in any case, may be negligible and may not work out profitable (as also stated by you) - given the amount of money spent on refilling Nitrogen over a period of time, say 4-5 years / 45-55K kms of tyre life.

However, like I have suggested earlier (to Binoy), I feel it’s worth spending once to gather a first-hand experience – there’s no disadvantage whatsoever.

Pankaj,

that it says check pressure you must, but nitrogen will let you avoid filling. Not much an incentive, I say! This weekly exercise that I have with my car tyres lets me have a weekly review of tyre condition, to check if there is uneven wear / wavy wear / nicks / bulges or other abnormalities. With the claimed'advantages of N2, users will get careless about checking pressure and may suddenly find themselves pulling hard on tyres at 15-20 PSI.  Something I would avoid thru my weekly check/topup using my handy battery operated tyre inflator.

yes...i liked this point !!!.....

n pls..for Rs.25 per Check-up !!atleaast i WONT get 100% Nitrogen filled in my tyres ...... franlky ..lets hav a poll out here.....

who all r ready to PAy Rs.25 for that 30 % of extra Nitrogen ?...(70 is already der !)

It's not popular at all (no need for the poll).

Nitrogen refilling is not required per week. Please go through the entire discussions - page 3 onwards - or atleast through the details mentioned in post 52 (para 3).  Thanks.

By the way (further to post 56 above)... presently, as I understand, subsequent top-ups  are free for 3/6 months - here it's for 6 months & they charge Rs.50/- per tyre (spare is filled-up free).  This is marketing strategy to promote use of Nitrogen - but hasn't yield any benefits yet.

See this page

As it is air is 78% Nitrogen (N2). No matter how much N2 is pumped in, at the most one can get upto about 80% N2 by volume inside the tyre. To get 100% N2 would mean sucking out all existing air from the tyre, refilling it with N2, again sucking out everything, refilling again a few times - an exercise which would be costlier, more time consuming and simply not worth it. So 80% is what you can achieve practically - that's a mere 2% more N2 over "normal" air...you decide if its worth even an extra rupee...

The dealer did so twice in my case.  I don't mean/claim that I have 100% (or so) Nitrogen in my tyres, therefore.  I also do not mean to advocate for use of Nitrogen, as is evident from my views discussed before.
