This has always been on my mind but it is now that I have thought of putting it here to see if others also think like me. I feel pedestrians also lack a lot of traffic sense and discipline. They cross whenever they want putting the drivers and themselves at equal risk. Cyclists are also the same with no sense of traffic. They just take a turn without noticing or caring to look if there are any vehicles coming. If any of these get hit by a vehicle everyone knows what happens in India to the so called 'offender' in India. Please sleep or sit whereever they want even if it is in the middle of a very busy road. This callous attitude tends to irritate me to the core at times and I feel like giving such idiots an earfull even if it is not directly concerning me as they tend to follow the same practise every where and could be a concern for me tomorrow. What do you guys think on this?

i completely agree with you

govt have made some efforts in stoping them like fine on crossin the road not on zebra crossing

making seperate lanes for cycles and rickshaws but there is lack of proper mgt. otherwise things would have improved drastically

anyways hope that govt. takes care of that in futureSmile

AFAIK there is rule for pedestrians and cyclists as well but not sure of the amount. And our dutyful cops do not bother about these creatures on road at all. They are more concerned about 2/4 wheelers as there is more scope for them to put fine than pedestrians and cyclists.

My 2 cents.

never heard of any fine for pedestrians. Cyclists also I have not heard of any fine. All the cops do might be to let the air off the tyres or charge something nominal like 50 bucks that too without a receipt

Please don't call them creatures. There was once a time where they ruled the streets. Also in the nearby future their turn will come around. Just see how the fuel prices and CO2 levels going up

Well yes, pedestrians are also as careless as drivers - except that in the case of an accident the pedestrian stands to be the worst affected physically and the driver in all other respects!!

There are numerous instances, where people walk on the road thinking that it belongs to them - even that the responsibility of their safety rests solely on the drivers (its like "I'll walk the way I want, its driver's responsibility to drive safe"). Seeing this I do indeed feel that drivers usually do a good job of carrying out this responsibility!!

Such pedestrians who jaywalk, who use the road despite an available and clean footpath, cross the road even when the signal says otherwise should be fined - in fact they must be fined as much as a driver is fined for jumping a signal. Alas, this is India where there are rules but no enforcement.

@Rohit - I feel exactly like you say. Infact I feel that the pedestrian should be fined more heavily because incase of an accident he/she has the risk of even losing their lives while the driver causing the accident might get a life imprisonment but still be alive. So if pedestrians are to be desciplined then they need to be fined heavily. But then another things we need to look at is that there are too many people 'living' on the roads. Many a times I have seen these children playing on busy roads carefree of the oncoming traffic which again puts both of them at a risk alike. How can they be dealt with?

No one called them creatures.

@centaur, the above post had "creatures", not your post.

I agree with you all too, there are serious issues with the way some pedestrians behave. Have had bitter experiences while trying to save some of such ladies (I used to be on bicycle/bike then) I had no option but to meet an accident. In one case (while on bicycle) in order to save a young lady suddenly coming in front, I had to take a full turn and what immediately followed was a bad collision with a respectable old lady. Poor lady fell down, I felt so bad (was in school then). People scolded me, removed air from my tyres, also removed the air pressure knobs (they would have hit me if I were not too young then). I still did not get angry at all, afterall they were right and the old lady was hurt thanks to me. What really annoyed me, though, was the fact that the idiot young lady pedestrian, who was the root cause for this, also snarled at me and walked off.

Thanks for pointing it out Jay and apologies for my previous post made without checking this correctly.

What urged me to post this thread was that I see off late this has been on the increase and so has the number of people living on the foot paths. People walk right through when the signal is green for oncoming vehicles. Looking at their senseless parents even the kids learn this and follow it right till their old age. I mean how callous can people be? I have always also seen people on scooters/bikes coming the wrong way that too when they have their families (read two kids and the better half, a typical Indian scene) along with them. Arent these people bothered that they are definitely putting themselves at risk but their idiotic habit is putting others also at risk. It is high time cops even penalised cyclists and pedestrians to make the roads safe.

maybe we should educate adults by sending them to schools on road safetyLaughingLaughing

it is definitely required especially in dense areas like old delhi etc.
