People walk right through when the signal is green for oncoming vehicles. Looking at their senseless parents even the kids learn this and follow it right till their old age. I mean how callous can people be? I have always also seen people on scooters/bikes coming the wrong way that too when they have their families (read two kids and the better half, a typical Indian scene) along with them. Arent these people bothered that they are definitely putting themselves at risk but their idiotic habit is putting others also at risk.
They couldn't care less!! You see its a pervading sense of mob-mentality where the injured party by default becomes the victim (even though the injury has resulted due to the "victim's" own stupidity), and people will always support the victim. There's also this rich-poor divide and in the eyes of the not-so-rich, the rich (i.e., car owners) deserve to be looked at with contempt. So what happens is due to this all-pervading sense of "poor me" and percieved sense of strength in numbers most pedestrians do not care about safety - if they get hit they know that the driver IS going to be bashed up, and expect drivers to take major part of the responsibility in being careful. This is even more evident in slum localities where the locals consider everything in the locality to be their turf - including the roads that pass through them. The roads and traffic are an unwelcome hinderance to them.

S = k.I^2, where S is the amount of stupidity a species possesses, I is the intelligence the species has and k is the universal constant of stupidity.

seriously its very irresponsible and annoying at same time...people cross road right in front of oncoming traffic and  turn their head other way around as if now i am on road and its the responsiblity of driver to avoid me...morover at night people cross road so carelessly...its almost impossible to see them with glare of light coming from oncoming traffic...that i hate the most...and what about cylclists...they ride zig-zag kind of way and even tries to overtake in heavy traffic..sometimes gets a feeling to get down to hit one or two..Yell

one thing would like to share here...though off the topic but still...Tongue out

read a line in newspaper after khan market, delhi incident that i try to remmember whenever get angry while driving(happens a lot)...

"is a dent in your car worth dying for..."

we never know what other person might be carrying...

...liked it so thought of mentioning it here..Smile

Please don't call them creatures. There was once a time where they ruled the streets. Also in the nearby future their turn will come around. Just see how the fuel prices and CO2 levels going up

Could you please clarify whats wrong in calling them creatures. Am I not a creature or arent you a creature. If I am moving in a car do I loose my identity of being a creature? When I say "these creatures" it means that lot or that group who are crossing the road on foot. I guess in one of the previous post rohit was talking about rich-poor divide. Why you always want to see things in that sense... can you be thoughtful enough to take things in lighter and equality sense?

I was not aware that "creature" is a bad word. I apologize if it hurts someone but my usage of the word was not in wrong or discrimating sense. Still I apologize.

Coming back to actual topic. When I was in Delhi in 2003-2004, I remember going to places like ITO, CP where the signals are quite big and have stoppages almost for more than 3 mins on one side. Here for the first time I saw signals for people crossing the road on foot that too only on zebra crossing. Anyone found crossing the road other than zebra crossing or crossing when signal for walk is red was summoned  by traffic cop. They were given a slip but not sure what was the fine, if any or it was something else. But I have witnessed such incident in Delhi. I used to wonder at that time that even walking on road is dangerous.

However this perception changed when I visited Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Banglore, Chennai, Kolkata and many other small and big cities. Coming from a small city I used to think that its quite common in small place people not following rules but after visiting these places I was proved wrong.

The main reason for no control over these pedestrians, apart from the ones cited by rohit of rich-poor divide and sharing responsibility, is that the number of pedestrians always out-numbers no of cars/bikes on the given signal in most of the cases. Also, people growing lazy of walking down to zebra crossing or even to FOB due to changing life styles is also responsible. This is what I feel.

I guess the only way to come out of this problem is to educate them which is almost next to impossible. Personally I find myself standing even sometimes 30 mins at one side waiting for traffic to reduce or signals to go red in order to cross the road. I am more afraid crossing road on foot than driving on the road

Those who claim that they know everything do not know what they dont know.

Just my view here: Man is an animal, but we would not call each others animals. Same applies for use of word "creatures" ... the word when used in this context would sound more like a non-human adjective/articulation to human beings. I may be wrong but perception differs from person to person. I would personally avoid using this word for the reasons above. But once again, this is just my view and no offense meant in any way
