European manufacturers traditionally known for diesel engines  because they've been serving their home markets for years. And US\Japanese car manufactures are not expert in same due to less popularity of diesel vehicles in that region.

Market share of diesel cars in Japan and US is less than 5% and US Gasoline(Petrol) price is cheaper than Diesel. So logically less investment in diesel R&D in that region.

While in Europe has more than 50% market share is for Diesel vehicle –So theoretically one can prefer diesel engine from Fiat/VW/Merc/BMW  over Ford/GM/Toyota/Nissan . I opted Dzire over Fiesta
for the same reason

Look at the current market portfolio. The “necessity-mother” theory - In  Indian market,

Suzuki borrowed diesel engine from Fiat for Zift/Ritz/Dzire/SX4
Nissan borrowed diesel engine from Reneault  for Micra [ Logan’s engine]
Tata borrowed diesel engine from Fiat for Vista/Manza

Look at current Ford fiesta/figo diesel engine – 1399 CC engine produce maximum power of 68 bhp
But Fiat MJD of – 1248 produce maximum power of 75/93 BHP with better efficiency and less vibration sound !

It is also interesting to watch Koreans(Hyundai) are coming up with good diesel engines !

Good information from Mr. Jain.

Its still a question of debate between the Fiat Multijet & Ford TDCI, which is better??

If your use is predominantly in city,go for Figo or Fiesta diesel,or Micra as they pick up quite well at slow city speeds. If you mostly use the car on highway,go for MJD or DDSI or CRDI(Maruti,Tata,Fiat,Hyundai) .However, the DDSI engine in new diesel SX4 comes with a VGT which takes care of this problem and it is very peppy at all normal speeds

CRDi(Common Rail Direct Injection) is a technology whcih mainly patented by Robert Bosch – And it is used in most of the modern Diesel engines including 1.3 Multijet.

Other CRDi Engines :

Tata Dicor – Dicor stands for Direct Injection Common Rail.
Ford TDCi (Fiesta’s– Again DCi is stands for Direct Common Rail Injection)
In Fact most of the new Diesel engines are uses that Technology.

Variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs) is  new technology for optimum performance for turbo engine[ All the above engines are using Turbo charger]

Regarding Fiat Multijet & Ford TDCI : My vote for fiat Multijet.
Ford TDCI is a older engine with lesser power than multijet[Both City and Highway as per my driving experience] and also with more vibration and sound.
Ford is planning to reform the engine with new fiesta lunch and we can again compare at that time.

Ford already has different diesel engines they can use in the Fiesta.  The European Fiesta offers a choice of diesel engines and they have a bunch of other diesel models with engines of various sizes available there.  Some of them are a lot more powerful than that 1.4L.  GM's offerings in Europe are similar.  I'm not sure why Ford and GM haven't brought more of their European market diesel engines to India.  Perhaps in time they will arrive.

Ford and GM having plenty of diesels doesn't break Jain's theory.  Ford and GM both have major operations in Europe, complete with factories, engineers, and a whole bunch of models they don't offer in the US.  Essentially you can think of most Ford and GM diesels as coming from Europe.

Does Diesel costing about twice in Europe when compared to USA ring a bell?

The focus of engine development would be overall refinement and efficiency in Europe, whereas raw power is what USA is generally interested in.

I am generalizing beyond permissible limits, but the most prominent features of the markets generally shape the direction of R&D. That is why, in my opinion, the difference you see.

To make things worse, Indians pick and choose (or companies pick and choose for Indians) the type of engines suitable for Indian market, and more often than not the Indian chant of "FE! FE! FE!" gets them a European engine rather than an American one.
