Why didn the manual mode work? In all my cars, except the audi and the forester, even though the motor does not work, you can still work the lock. I shall try with our indica. Didnt it have the lever kinda thingy? AFAIK it works in my Indica.

It didnt work bcoz the mechnical wire attached between the lock & the motor is bounded by the motor so if the motor is jammed or have no power in locked position the attached mehninical wire will not let the door lock open without power unless the wire is disengaged manually by removing the door cover.

My Indica did not have the lever thing which you pull up (older models had that) mine was 2 knobs inside one to lock & second for opening the door.

A very scary and very informative thread. Thank you very much all for posting your experiences.

Jay the purpose is not to scare anyone but warn about the pitfalls of sudden failure..............surely rare but quite consistently repeatable hence dangerous. Technology is a double edge sword it can work against you if you dont know how to use it.

my case was 2002 model there may have been many design changes for saftey in the door lock, but I suggest that each one of us double check this system by removing the battery wire see the results. As a precaution hammer should always be there in side the glove box.

in this case lay down on rear seat and hit rear glass with ur foot, start from any one corner hardly so glass falls out with its rubber. i guess u need not have to keep hammer every time, remember is not rear thing it may happen mostly in rainy season whem car sunk till engine level. so be prepared and trained and advice others too.

I am pretty much worried after reading this thread to take my family out in the car for outings during weekends and holidays.

I have a bike, but didn't want to ride them ( even though had to ride few times to beach and other places as i didn't have any other go ),

One of the main reason i bought this car was for safely travelling on highway ( once in a while for family to temple or to some resort )

It sounds very scary after reading about the accidents, I firmly believe that GOD destines everyone's fate, so if it has to happen it will by any means.

I've got the ALTO K10 ( factory fitted power windows VXI ) and fitted the autocop security system installed. Now planning to get a sharp hammer and a small fire extinguisher, in my car for safety.

Why do you need to use your leg,, what about the tool kit that came with the car which has spanners and other hard iron things, you can easily fold the rear seats ( which nowadays come as 60:40 or 50:50 split) and access the tools from the boot.

Bought 2 Hammar, 1 for my Vento & another for my Palio Foot in mouth. I think this is the best option in case of emergency.

So much for technology!! You know, its good to have good old manual systems at times. I guess that is why fully automated vehicles are those that don't (or shouldn't) carry any humans!!

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Man-charred-as-car-catches-fire/Article1-807725.aspx

A 55-year-old businessman from Rohini was charred to death in the old Dwarka underpass near IGI Airport after his car allegedly caught fire. The victim, Pawan Gupta, could not come out of the car due to technical failure. Gupta was going towards his residence in the wee hours of Sunday when his WagonR car caught fire, police said. The police are yet to ascertain the  reason behind the incident.

The doors of the car were locked due to some technical problem and Gupta couldn’t come out of the vehicle in time. Police broke the glass of his car to take out his body.

“Forensic experts are carrying out investigation to find out the actual cause of fire,” said a police official and added it is suspected that a technical problem in the AC or a spark in the car might have led to the fire.

“We came to know about the incident around noon after the police informed my uncle, as the car was registered in his name. We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” said Ankush, Gupta’s son.

Gupta, a marble trader, owned a factory in Mangolpuri. He was returning to his residence from the airport, where he had gone to receive his friend’s son, who was coming from Germany.  “But Gupta did not meet his friend’s son and was returning alone when the accident took place,” police said.

Police statistics showed that fire incidents inside cars are triggered by fuel leak in the engine bay, coupled with short-circuit. Sometimes a crack near the engine or battery of the car may cause fire.

This is one of the reason I have not activated Auto lock in my Vento. I usually lock manualy in city and have made an habit of doing the same. On highway I certainly do not require doors to be locked since car is always on move.

This is a very real and probable cause of fires. Let alone spark or short-circuit, even high temperatures (especially in the engine bay) can ignite fuel vapours and hence one should never ignore even the slightest smell of fuel in and around the vehicle - at least do a visual check in the engine bay, with engine running if possible (fuel pressure related leaks will be visible/evident only if engine and hence pump is running). Happened to my car a month back - the fuel return pipe near the engine had a small crack, probably because of a rat, and it was leaking petrol. Just a minute into the drive and I somehow felt that there is too much petrol smell, and opened the bonnet to discover petrol literally gushing out from that little crack! Promptly drove back home, parked it and changed the return pipe at the first opportunity. I shudder at the thought of what could have happened had I not followed my instinct!
