Supercharger is an engine driven turbine that helps compress the intake air, which enables you to increase the volume of air that goes into the engine. At the same time, more fuel is also used which results in higher peak power. The difference between turbocharger and supercharger is the drive, ie SC is engine driven while TC is driven by the exhaust gases.
While a SC gives out uniform efficiency throughout the powerband of the engine, it creates an extra load to the engine. A turbo initially offers minute resistance to the exhaust gases and after a certain engine RPM, it starts powering up. This is referred to as TURBO-LAG. Turbo lag will give the engine some laziness untill the boost RPM and after that the engine is totally agile. Both systems are used in cars but in India, SCs are very rare and found only on exotic imports. Most diesel cars and some petrol cars have a turbocharger from the factory.
Retrofitting a SC in India is what I have never heard of. A turbo charger is not a single part that can be added to the car and it requires extensive mods by professional tuners. The whole setup can cost 1l upwards for a car modification.
