Prerna,

M800 was a bit too old in the market compared to cars of other car companies. Maruti decided to retire it and replace the entry level slot with the next best hot selling item i.e Alto. Also this helped Maruti trim its offerings and concentrate more on the Alto. The Alto with the K-series engine only helps in increasing sales as people get more bang for buck or VFM as they call it.

Do you think it costs Maruti more to produce and Alto as compared to an M800. Obviously not. Its all about branding and positioning itself in the market.

Similar to M800, Hyundai decided to retire the Getz. It was not because the Getz was not gathering any numbers, but because it wanted to concentrate on i10 and Santro as compared to the Getz.

WagonR is also managing well coz thats the way its branded and positioned. However, Estilo is the black sheep out of the lot. Even the face lifted estilo launched last year has not set the cash registers ringing. Instead of the Alto, I guess its time to phase out the Estilo.

the estilo is a car that is amde for the young generation it wont be phases out soon, while the alto is an very reliable car from the maruti stable.the wagon R is a small mini wagon family car ,alto  @ wagon have good sales while the estilo is lagging behind,it too has tasted successs but the indica @ santro are more practical.the estilo is also not very cheap and does not have an excellent resale value.the alto is like another 800 and nano is in a totally different segment, the nano is also an city car but he alto can do speeds of 130 kmph enlike the nano.

the sales of the 800 vwere dropping drastically due to the introduction of the alto and the last blow was given to it b nano and other second hand cars.it was also not available in BS4 stage everywhere so it was not allowed to be sold in major cities.

As far as I know, It is being speculated that Suzuki motors will launch a trimmed down version of their car Cervo with a 667cc engine claiming a mileage of 27kmpl. Most probably this car will be replacing alto 800cc model.

I don't think the Alto will go away at least in the next couple years.  The Cervo may effectively be its replacement, but the Alto sells so well I think it will hang around for some time.  I think the M800 is on the chopping block though.  Maruti more or less openly declared the end is coming when they declined to update the engine to BSIV specs.  It only sells a few thousand a month, and those sales are probably mostly just because it costs a bit less than an Alto.  If the Cervo lives up to its billing it will put an end to the M800 and make a big dent in Alto sales.  That's ok for the company though, as the sales will hopefully just switch from one Maruti product to another.  They need to do something to get ready, as GM and Fiat are both planning Alto competitors.
