Hi, I have budget of 5.0 lacs(+/- 10,000 only), I am planning to hold my new car for long term (5-6 yrs) & my car usage will be less than 15000kms in a year, it will not be used regularly (will get start on weekends)...and will be used sometimes shopping and sometimes going for long drive or max 500km to & fro out of station once in two months.

I have given my self 2 choices..(1) i20 1.2 Magna kappa petrol (2) Tata Indigo eCS ...the latest claiming 20+ mileage...below are my issues for which I am searching for solution..

(A) If i go for Indigo eCS thinking of mileage...it worries me of the diesel engine maintenance..and its life...as it will be using mostly on weekends!

(B) If I go for i20 then will I loose a very good option of Indigo bcoz of its mileage ???

If you will be using the car for less than 800 km/month go for i20 else Indigo eCS is a fantastic diesel option.

Why not consider other 1.2 L Petrol engine cars within the budget of 5 L with good mileage ?

You have many hatchbacks with some amazing numbers

1. Chevrolet beat - 18.6

2. Nissan Micra - 18.06

3. Maruti Ritz - 17.7

i20 is definitely a better buy. If you want a diesel, then make sure you don't get anything except the 1.3 Multijet/quadrajet/DDiS.

The only area where Indigo eCS scores over i20 is that it's a diesel car.

Otherwise, it has a 1.4L diesel engine of TATA that has a history of higher maintenance cost as compared to 1.3MJD used in Indica Vista/Manza/Swift/DZire/Ritz/Linea/Grande Punto/palio stile.

There is a reason 8 cars are running on the same diesel engine.

Innocent

I like the way you mentioned your query,You've finalised both great cars.but i would suggest you i20

Magna,by because in this car you will get more hp,rpm, torque, more valve(DOHC) smooth and faster engine and more interior features..so go for it.For me buying a classy hatchback is much better than a mid size sedan.anyhow all knows Hyundai is master in cars..

Also to add, I have the requirement of having good Boot space due to which I chose these two options...as I expect at least the luggage of a family to carry whenever I plan for an out of station trip.

I also have a doubt on Indigo eCS engine maintenance cost on long run...although people say that nowadays diesel & petrol engine techonolgy have narrowed down & have minimal difference in maintenance cost??? Please suggeest...

As a car i 20 is a better car  . i 20 also has got decent boot space ( appx 290 lit ) & it can accommodate 2 suitcases easily .

Major difference is FE - CS has major advantage over i20 . But if you want diesel economy , go for MJD.

Classic quandary. Entry level sedan or Premium hatchback?

Tough choice, really. The Indigo eCS has a DICOR engine. The same engine is doing duty in the Tata Safari and the Sumo Grande MKII. Therefore, I think you don't have much to fear from the Indigo eCS engine.

I also believe spares for the Indigo would be cheaper than the i20. The Indigo would be a lot cheaper during all your outstation trips. But the i20 would give you a much better driving experience. The i20 would be more responsive in the ghats than the Indigo.

Finally, its your choice and as I said earlier, it is really a tough choice. I think you can look at the following to help you decide.

1. Hatchback or sedan?

2. Petrol or Diesel?

3. Fuel Efficiency or Fun-to-drive?

P.S. : Why don't you look at the Manza Aqua Quadrajet? It has the national engine, is a better sedan than the Indigo CS eLX and is just Rs. 80k odd more than the Indigo CS eLX OTR?

Indigo e-CS has a 1.4L TDi engine which is different than the Dicor class engine.

Have you ever heard an Indica (esp during winters). It has a known problem with a belt due to which it makes a lot of noise. Plus, it has more NVH inside the cabin.

Overall, Indigo CS is a good product but is a no match for the Hyundai i20.

If you compare it with i20, leave the FE aside, i20 wins in every aspect.
