I just had a look at the Chevy U-VA and was wondering why this car is not successful? I had got amazing space inside, good interiors, good look but still I don't see much of it on road. Is it because of it's low mileage? or is it that it's competing against Swift?

I think the vehicle was too ahead of its time

Only Palio had the space UVA provided, and Palio had been a failure of sorts in the earlier avatar of Fiat.

The main reason why the first crop of luxury hatches failed is the pricing - Indians think simplistically and for them, to shell out as much money for a hatch as for a sedan is sacrilage. When Palio was introduced, it was priced 5.25L or something like that, and at that time, Esteem VXi was priced at 5.5L. People thought Fiat was mad to have priced a hatch that much. Uno, a spartan but spacious hatch by Fiat costed considerably lower.

UVA was named the car of the year by one of the prestigeous awards (Don't recall who it was) but Chevy has not expanded its dealer network even in metros sufficiently for the users to feel assured of service. They have not built a confidence in the general public about their ability to compete with the major car mfrs, like Maruti. No one wants to be left holding the basket when it comes to paying top money for their cars, and the volume of cars and the dealer network size did not inspire people to patronize the mfr to sufficient degree. Even Aveo suffered on this account. It was only after the smashing success of Spark (incidentally not an original Chevy model) that paved the way to eventual assured survival of Chevy in Indian market. By then UVA was already long in the tooth, and on its way to be labeled as a failure.

So goes the sob story of UVA. Nothing to do with the car technically as such.

Even I feel sad about the failure of UVA,it is better than SWIFT in my opinion. Not just the UVA many other good cars from CHEVY/DAEWOO DMAT,like optra, aveo, failed miserably and unjustified in that aspect

Even BEAT and CRUZE will fail once the initial euphoria is over,BEAT is already down to 1k plus units from 6k plus units

Chevy/Daewoo dmat is unlucky

Only car which had little success was Tavera but it was IZUZU and was a people carier

In India GM has got so many better cars compare to others in last 5 years , namely U-VA , Aveo , Optra & Optra Magnum Diesel . But they are all good simply as a product . Not  as a package what customers want . And thats why they failed . Also GM has its own problems at home & it did affect its performance in India .

But now GM seems very serious about Indian market & we will see lot more actions . Their strategy to bring chines partner's cars to India in near future is proof of that .

I wonder why they can't bring 1.3 lit MJD of Fiat in India . I think they have a stake in that engine .( might be wrong ).

GM should seriously think of having a tie up with someone who has major service network basically very similar to the TATA-FIAT tie up. That looks to be the main pain point. GM can relaunch those models like U-VA, Aveo, etc with minor changes and launch it with big bang highlighting the service network aspects once they have the tie up. I know it's difficult but that's the only way.

They are offering hell lot of things like 1 lc km/3 yrs maintenance free and some package where you just pay 6k and you won't have to pay a single penny even to change the headlights for upyo 45k run. But seems nothing is working.

Going by the number of Chevy Spark's on the road one can say that the sales of Spark are surely climbing in the last one year or so. I am sure the free maintainence/warranty concept has surely helped. Sadly, its only the SPARK which is selling. Cant say the same for Optra, UV-A, Aveo, Cruze etc...

Chaand , Cruze is the highest selling car in D segment where rivals like Civic , Altis & Laura are .It is the success of Cruze that force Toyota to bring Altis Diesel in India . Honda is also seriously thinking about diesel cars for the same . GM has a problem with U-VA , Aveo & Optra . They have failed to bring desired sales figures .A segment - Spark & Beat , D Segment - Cruze & SUV Segment - Captiva are doing very well .

One problem with UVA kind of size and price is absence of a diesel variant. If Chevrolet came with a diesel variant in 2005-6 of UVA. it could have been bestseller than swift diesel!
