Logically Honda Service center should be able to track the key.

It would have been easier for the poor car owner for the key to have been left untouched, as the owner would come looking for it.

Picking it up and trying to return it would mean extra efforts for everyone, and the feasibility of returning is also suspect.

Or You should have left a note/card on the place to contact you, whereupon you could have returned the keys after verification.

I second Joel. Police station may be a lousy place to hand over the key to, and they are often involved in theft themselves.

My uncle's new zen needed some service and he called a local service centre. They sent a mechanic to his home, who said that the car should be taken to the service centre. My uncle handed over the keys to him and he just vanished with the car.

That time we had some contacts with a CBI officer. He strongly suggested to first file an F.I.R. While my uncle was going for the same, one of his so-called agents discouraged him and said he knows the police staff personally and there's no need for all that procedure.

The same midnight the CBI officer got a call from the police station saying that our car had been found. He immediately called us and we were delighted, and rushed to the police station. As soon as we reached, they apologized saying "sorry sir, that was someone else's car".

The CBI officer took us out for a moment and asked whether we filed the F.I.R. When my uncle said not yet, he said, with a sigh, that we must forget the car now. He said, from his experience over 2 decades, that the found car must have been indeed ours, but by the time we reached, the police must have been pleased to realise that no F.I.R. was lodged and now they would all eat up money from the spare parts.

It's over 5 years now, and we never got the car back.

Contacting Honda Service Centre should be much better. If possible, try to insist that the car owner comes to you with his car. You can verify yourself with the key then, and return the key. This may be a little risky only if the car owner himself is not genuine/gentleman and intends to trouble you for your good deed (very unlikely but possible).

Honda Service center would be better place as they can find out who is it 1 st owner  by see its key no. Police will not give much importance to a lost car key, they  don't give much importance even to a lost car then forget  about a lost car keyUndecided.

In my personal opinion, You should destroy the key. I am into locksmithing business and from my personal experience, the person who lost the key will neither go to police station nor tor Honda service center in hope of getting it back. If he can't find it on the road on the very same day, where he had lost it, there is a little chance that he comes back another day looking for it.

Car dealer won't be able and try to trace the car as there is no key number imprinted on the key.

Destroying the key will atleast help in keeping the car security intact.
