I would like to add some tech. to it.
Well there lies a tech reason as well behind the difference in pricing of these two motor variants. The metallurgy of the running componenet , fuel injection and burning component are a bit more in diesel motor as compared to petrol one . On the top of it, the diesel motor in an automobile would be highly irrelivant without a turbocharger. The turbo charger with an intercooler adds more air as compared to naturally aspirated engine and adds more cost for the engine block.
Diesel engine are always a CI (Compression Ignition ). It is always the compression ration which makes the air to reach to its self ignition temp and so how it burns. To achieve that compression ration the metallurgy ( the material quality) as to be improved and light to withstand that extreme condition.
And in my opinion the above is the prime reason behind this pricing difference
