Guys

See i don't want to start a discussion just for the sake of it. It is always good to know about cars but what good a car is if you dont know how to get the best out of the machine. I tried to search for threads in context to the above but could not find much being mentioned there can you please guide me to some threads or posts related to this where safe driving habits and maintenance has been discussed elaboratly.

Regards

What aspects of driving? There are threads that will tell you about one specific aspect. Otherwise the thread that discusses just driving will look like a complete encyclopaedia.

I appreciate your idea of the thread, but let it be some more specific.

Hi Krishna

What my point is can we get advices regarding what things should be kept in mind while driving to get more effecient mileage and reduce the wear and tear of the automobile. Look We do small small things individually to get the best from our car and if that could be collated under one head we can get a good material for all the users of carwale. Like when I drive in congested traffic I usually switch off the AC, do not rev when you start first time in the day , while driving try not to exceed 2000rpm dont stop the engine immediatly after completion of the journey let the fan stop first and then switch off. such little little things but yes why not is'nt it a nice idea that we develop an Encyclopedia of ours on good driving habits for the benefit of all our readers?

Once while getting my 800 serviced the mechanic told me "try never switching off the engine when the fan in on" the reason he gave me was it helps the fan belt and the coolant to function better there by increasing the life of both the belt and the engine. Would you believe this I had driven 800 for say around 10 years now and never had the fan belt changed, and had done almost 150000 kms and also for how much did I sell my Chutki for 68000 bucks modal 2000 last. Look I'm not from technical background what someone adviced me I practised it and it paid that is what I mean to discuss these nitty gritty things once somewhere someone must have told you (a tip given) and you practised it and you got the advatnage.

Hope I've made myself clear

Regards

Now there are two types of radiator cooling fans - motor driven, and belt driven. The belt driven are just that - driven by a belt that is powered by the engine, and it stays on irrespective of whether the coolant is cool or hot. The newer vehivles all have motor driven fans, that work selectively based on whether the coolant temperature is hot enough to need the fan, or not. There is a sensor in the coolant circuit, which decides when the fan will run and when it will stop. This type of fan DOES NOT NEED A BELT.

Now looking at both the types, your assertion about letting the fan stop before switching the engine off looks odd, except for the case where the coolant temperature is high, and the motor driven fan is working. If you switch off the engine then, the fan will stop. But as the heat source of the engine is also stopped, eventually the engine will cool down and nothing will go wrong as such. The belt driven fan anyways cannot stop unless you stop the engine.

I am as confused as I was before we started. Mostly the mechanic gave you some 'gyan' just for the heck of it. It may not necessarily be a very important tip.

HA! ha! HA!

well I cleared it already

" Look I'm not from technical background what someone adviced me I practised it " and now I've technical experts to help me . but you are missing here onething in the motor driven fan as soon as you put off the ignition key it stops bluntly and immediatly u put the powers on the fan would start again. Try it.
