Hi I am new to this forum. Born and brought up in Bangalore and a native of Kannur. If you ask me the best route to take to Kannur from Bangalore will be - Bangalore > Mandya > Mysore Outer Ring Road (take a right from columbia Asia hospital) > Hunsur > Nagarahole > Kutta > Tholpetty > Kattikulam >Mananthavady > Nedumpoil > Koothuparamba > Kannur total distance is 360 to 370 kms. The stretch from the ring road was almost being completed in Nov 2011 when i came on this route. I have gone on this route even with an alto some years back. Compared to the Hunsur, Virapet route this is way better. You will also enjoy the drive through the Nagarahole forest.

Just one challenge Entry into the Nagarahole forest in restricted from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.

Thanks for the info. Next time I will take that route.

Is that route safe ? Virajpet route is safe and we can get help if necessary. It's forest between makkkootam and virajpet. But you will see many Bikes and Cars passing by. So there's no pbm even if you drive alone.

I just took a car with driver from bangalore to Taliparamba and back last weekend. This was the route and it was great all through except the strecth between Gonikopal and Virajpet about 50 kms.

Total 7 to 8 hours, approx 300 kms

-Bangalore-Mandya

-Mandya -Srirangapatna

-Just after Srirangapatna, take Mysore Bypass road to Hunsur     (bypass road slightly bad)

-Hunsur to Gonikopal

-Gonikopal to Madikeri (first few kms road good, then bad all the way to Virajpet)

-Madikeri to Virajpet

(Do not take Virajpet bypas road, very very bad condition.  Much faster going through Virajpet town)

-Virajpet to Perumpady-Maakuta-Kootupozha

-Kootupozha towards Irrity

Somewhere after cfrossing bridge over river after Kootupozha, sign says left Srikandapuram, right Irrity

Take left Srikandapuram  and then on to Taliparamba

by the way, the above route is way shorter and quicker than going through gundelpet, manthavady, etc.

not yet.... was there last weekend... 4 and 5th Feb 2012.... did a mistake of taking this route during the Bangalore - Virajpet route... the forest section is really bad and to avoid that while returning I tried the Gonikkoppal - Periyapatna - Hunsr.... saved almost an hour and the road was much better....

try this route...
