Kapil, the manual is referring to premium fuel by its octane rating (NOT by price/additives, etc) I suppose - probably that fuel is sold here as ordinary. Ordinarily (in US or Europe) premium fuel has a higher octane rating which reduces knocking - perhaps the "premium" sold in India may have a different composition - even opposite to what its supposed to be...

Hi Rohit, the manual provides for 91 octane petrol and 91 octane is sold as premium in Delhi and Mumbai (I am a Delhite).

The car is knocking on 91 octane petrol that means either I should be using 93 octane for the reduction of knocking or usage of 88 octane which is termed as ordinary in both DEL/BOM should be used

Please suggest...

Regards,

If the engine works normally with ordinary fuel then the problem is probably not the octane rating but the quality of fuel. Try fuelling the car at different pumps and see if it helps.

It is strange that the engine works normally with ordinary (i.e. lower octane) fuel when the recommendation is higher octane...

Hi Kapil,

Sorry for the slight delay in response. Knocking can happen because of various reasons. Most common reasons being using fuel of lesser octane OR adultrated fuel.

I would recommend you to stick to the recommendations of the manual and change the petrol station - Enquire with some local mechanics and they have all possible data about adultrated fuel - which bunks are into such practices and by how much - They have all the info.

Regards,
K Prasad

Hello Mr. Prasad,

Indeed, I tried changing 3 pumps in the past, but the position remained the same, I have even written to Hyundai motors as well and waiting for their reply, will definately update on the same.

I have read through this entire interesting thread in one go. Thanks to all you guys who contributed to my knowledge. I had to get on to almost the last page of the thread when finally my first query, "Has anyone got first hand experience of using System G additive?" was answered by KVSK.

I recollect Binoy saying somewhere near the beginning of the thread that he didn't want to try system D on his relatively new car to burn-n the engine. Is there any further thought to this? I was wondering whether I can straight away start using System G on a brand new car. Sorry if I am offending anyone by bumping this old thread.

I keep reminding myself that my car is just a means of commuting

Ordinary fuel - unless your car's manual explicitly states something else.
