If you i20 is having a rattling noise(sounds like kat kat kat) coming from the steering column while going over rough roads(only), have it checked at the nearest Hyundai A.S.S. They will first try to insert a bush to eliminate the noise. If the sound still persists, they may have to change the steering rack/column under warranty.

My i20 has this noise and the steering rack has to be changed in my car, which will be done ain a few days time .

Yes I will Pankaj ji.

Meanwhile  I would request others who have faced or are facing such rattling noise from their car's steering column to post their experiences regarding the same.

Here's the last bill where they installed a urethane  bush & yoke pad for free on the steering column to eliminate the steering column noise.

It seemed to have worked for a couple of days and the noise was not there. However it again started after two days, it was the same rattling noise eventhough the sound was very low. It seems to have picked up and become louder as days went by.

So,  I visted Om Hyundai again, they checked & got the approval from their Regional HO to replace the steering column which would take around 10-15 days to come. Will update as & when the steering  column is changed.

Hi All,

I have 2009 Silky Beige i20 (Asta). I am facing the same problem of steering rattling noise on rough roads. I have got it checked at the nearest dealer twice.

Firstly, during the first service, they put some rubber part to eliminate it but the noise persist. Secondly, during the second service, they have put some mechanical part. But it didn't work either. I have to go back to the dealer and get it checked again. I would ask them about the replacement of the steering column.

This steering problem is really annoying to me. It feels like every rough patch on the road is felt on the steering.

At times, I feel some vibrations on the steering as well. It might have to do with the motor driven power steering. If someone would like to comment on this?

Amit,

I feel you must talk to the dealer and get the steering rack or column replaced. As per the hyundai  worskhop guys here, Hyundai had sent a circular to all service stations to solve the steering rattling noise on the i20. Since your problem(like mine) didn't get rectified by installing the bush or yoke pad on the column, you are due for steering rack/column replacement under warranty. It apparently is a manufacturing defect in the steering column by the column manufacturer( not dangerous in any way nor does ir pose any threat to the car).  Speak to the service station, take a print out of this post and show it to them if you feel so.

Even I felt vibration on the steering wheel (after installing the bush) but that was just once that too when i revved up the engine to get out of a  pothole. haven't felt the vibration afterwards. But still the rattling noise persists(though in a low tone). The replacement steering rack for my car should arrive in may be another 7-10 days time.

Rest assured Hyundai is quite serious about this issue. If the service station does any natak, shoot off an angry e-mail to Hyundai cusomer care.

P.S. I added you to the list of Silky Beige i20 owners here at CW

Update:

Got a call from Om Hyundai that the new steering rack & a part for the hatch( to eliminate the springy noise from the hatch door) have arrived. I had asked them for door sill guards but that would be arriving early next week. So I would be going there next week.

hello everyone. i own a i20 magna pertrol and i have been facing the same problem of rattling noise from steering column when the car goes over bad roads. Also the steering vibrates and becomes loose and is risky if your driving at high speeds. the first time i complained to the dealer i was told that the steering column assembly would be replaced. they took my signature on the order form for the steering column and even recorded the noise coming from the steering column. i was told to come after 8 days when the steering column assembly arrives from hyundai. After 8 days i gave my car to them and while taking back the car i was told that only a bush was replaced. i didn't argue as the problem seemed to have been fixed. now i don't understand is if they only wanted to replace a bush why make me wait 8 days and take my signature to order the whole assembly. Is the dealer ordering parts and keeping for himself from the company using my VIN and signature?. Anyways the problem cropped up again a after driving about 500kms. This time they said its some spring making the noise. I gave the car for second service and they said they have adjusted it. Again the noise was gone. I was skeptical and knew the problem would occur again. Took the car on a drive to mumbai and realized that the steering had become tight so my whole right arm started to ache.during the drive the steering started becoming lighter and the steering column rattle started coming more frequently. I'm surprised that even though the company knows about this issue and is very common they are not straight away resolving it but a trying to hide the problem temporarily by changing some bush. Kudos to honda and toyota who accept faults in their cars and recall them. I bought a premium hatch like the hyundai i20 to avoid problems like these.

Sahil,

This noise is actually a common problem on EPS equipped vehcles. Even the i10 has it so does the Swift( I know it, I owned one preciously).

The installation of bush/yoke pad is the first step twards rectification of the problem. The dealers will not( and are not supposed) to directly replace the steering column. You may have noticed that the noise would have reduced, though its still there. If it still persists they are supposed to replaced the steering rack/column under warranty( i was told about this at the workshop).

I am going to get the steering rack replaced in my car sometime next week( the part has already arrived at the workshop). I will post about the whole process(with photos if possible).

So please talk to your dealer again, if they still don't co-operate, write an e-mail to Hyundai Customer Care :  cr@hmil.net

Do let us know how it went, Sahil. But I got to tell you this, I was never asked for any signature for ordering the steering rack.
