Hi All,

I have received from a colleague a very useful guide on tyre safety. However it is a powerpoint presentation (.pps) file slightly over 2 MB in size.

Can anyone please guide me if (and how) I could upload attachments on carwale ?

Meanwhile, I have shared this PPS on yahoogroups and given free access to everyone. So you can also access it on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WackyWanderers/attachments/folder/1071025143/item/list

Nice piece of information.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jay.

But seriously guys, this says the life is 4 years from manufacture. We get a new car with a tyre that must be a few months old already. And then a person who runs hardly 4 to 5K per year will have to change tyres with less than 20K running. Any comments?

Practically speaking, in case of less usage, there are no issues if you carry on for a couple of years more.  It also depends upon driving conditions/style.

It is easy for the tyre manufacturers to say junk tyres after 4 years. Now for a light user, the tyres don't get used much. Also typically light users are careful about the car's upkeep, so park them indoors, or in basements/stilts, where exposure to UV light is minimal. This should mean much lower degradation of the tyre compound than estimated for the 'base case' on which the expiry date is postulated. Therefore, the practical approach Pankaj posted above works.

I don't know how insurance plays into this. Could they deny a claim because tyres were > 4 years old? Or over/under inflated?

I guess, Insurance may deny claim only if the tyres are overused & totally worn-out, and if it could be determined as the sole reason for the accident.
