Idea is if your photographs are so precious, don't put them on the web. If you put them on the web, don't expect them not to be downloaded.
Copyright Laws allow 'fair use' in copying copyrighted material - that is how a library is allowed to photocopy certain reference material for studies etc. Also this is how Journalists make copies of stuff that they review and publish.
If there is a copyright mark on the photograph or any original work, it should contain (c) name of copyright holder and a year. The copyright then extends from that year to whatever limit is allowed in law. Written books - it is 90 years. May be lower for certain other media types etc,
So in summary, copyright does not prevent copying, it prevents use of the material without prior permission. Permission could be either free or conditional, with or without a royalty/remuneration.
