Mine is 9.10 Kubuntu, and also on auto update. Yes, getting networking working in Ubuntu is a lot of browsing and trial and errors, but once it works, it just works. At least there are just a couple of points to check, and one gets results if one goes by the web-based how-tos. No such luck with Windows. Also in Vista, it tries to be more intelligent than necessary and just spins a progress bar with 'repairing' network connection. It does not repair an iota, and vexes even more!

Airtel DSL. Tomorrow going to call Airtel support and get on with it.

Mine is USB modem which ,after searching on google, i realized is not the preferred choice for Ubuntu . So called up airtel couple of days back , their technical guy came but he didn't have any drivers for Ubuntu .But he said that he will forward my request and by tuesday i should have a Lan modem ( the ethernet one) . Hopefully that should work !!!

Yup, Vista is a complete failure . I would never upgrade my XP to vista even if someone pays me for this . But i am waiting to get my hands on Windows 7 . Should be able to arrange its RC(release candidate) soon !!!

BTW how's your firefox going with the tinyMCE ??

Yes. For USB, there are some tricks required with NDIS wrapper, basically use windows drivers that come with those modems.

On the other hand, on ethernet, it is a pain to get the network manager work in Ubuntu. I could never get it done, in spite of using it for over 2 years now. Once it works, it just works, so this two years of experience is just a couple instances of wrestling with it.

I usually have to modify /etc/network/interfaces, resolv.conf, and restart several times with minor random changes before 8.8.8.8 (google dns) or similar famous IP address starts responding to ping. Then on, it's breeze.

TinyMCE is what is making this reply possible. When I saw it working on the desktop, it was clear, I was having some local trouble.

Ya , i used the windows drivers and with help from google got the LED on the modem to light up.But after that the how-to's failed and i didn't know much about what to do next. Actually the problem is that while using pppoe-conf(if i remember correctly) the connection times out .

I did this  following some old thread on some forum . The guy seemed a novice  like me and it was encouraging to read how hard he was trying . He too got his modem to light up but later had a similar connection timed - out problem . After few weeks of fight he gave up and had to switch to some other modem and reading that was discouragingand i  too thought that all this wasn't worth the effort and decided to call up Airtel to change th modem .
