Hi Guyz,

I want to know whether the option (either the annual road tax or life time road tax) is available in tamilnadu while registering a new car?? (like in some UTs). What is the system followed in other states? where can we find information regarding this?

In the website of TN RTO http://www.tn.gov.in/sta/taxtables.html, both options are available (clause 5C and 5D). The price difference between both options is quite large. (i.e Rs.800 per year in annual tax and 8% of car cost in life time tax for 16 yrs). But I heard from most of the people that only life time tax method is followed.

Please advise me in this regard whether the option of annual tax is available and can i go for it.

Thnx

To my understanding, all states NOW recover life-time tax.  The annual tax referred by you could be applicable for people/vehicles relocating for a temporary period not exceeding 1 year.  Such a provision exists in various states.

Interestingly (in this context), RTOs are under State Government & not Central Government.  Academically speaking... I do not understand why the same is restricted only to Central Government employees?

After all, there are various other people (state & pvt. organizations) who undergo transfers & land up paying life-time taxes afresh & struggle to get pro-rata refund of taxes paid earlier in other state.

The facility should be extended to all transferable people – based on employer’s certificate etc.
