I happened to buy a 99 Peugeot 309 petrol car as a second car for a song as my Elantra crdi is not comfortable for town drives.I find this car exciting to drive and very comfortable in  rough roads with many speed breakers and potholes.Only problem is that it doesnt have a powersteering. Spares are available of course with difficulty.Mileage is also reasonable for the power it has.

What is the reason for its failure in India?

Peugeot's JV with PAL (in 1994) didn't work-out and ended in 1997. Peugeot left India leaving all of its existing car-owners no-where. No one can doubt on Peugeot 309's capabilities but since there is no service backup, no spares-availability, you can consider this car as failure. I have even seen many Peugeot cars rusting to death just because spares are not available!

Hey Doc!

I can only nod in agreement to what you have written in here. The 309 was indeed a great car in its time. It still induces that smile inside me. Drove this car a long time back and found it to be a great handler. The space was also good all round and the comfort level was boosted by the pliant ride quality. But then it died. Died due to the reasons that Ban has stated above. Good car this, and I truly honour your decision. Have a good time with it. And, we hope to see you more active in here from hereon.

Hello Madhu... My friend has 309 GL petrol car ... but the mileage is so bad .. its just moves 4 kms per litere ... Can you tell me what could be the problem ... since we dont have service stalls ... he is finding it difficult to get a  decent mileage.. and I guess 12 kms per lit should be decent
