Hi Experts,

I've recently bot a 2004 Honda City GXI in mint condition from a dealer.

During  the course of discussion on ftting accessories like Rear Spoilers, gear lock, auto cops etc, he inturn advised to invest by adding Four Bosch's spark plugs. He says it enhances car's performance dramatically and also improves fuel efficiency. Though he couldnt explain the technically how it was possible. He has done in his old Zen also and is very happy with the output.

Is it true and how does adding spark plug improve car's efficiency and why didnt Honda guys think of it in the first place.

Can someone pl guide.

Regards

Inquisitive.

As far as perfomane is concerned, not sure about the spoilers. But good quality spark-plugs when installed properly will help improve the engine's performance by some margin in that the incoming fuel is exposed more directly to the spark thereby ensuring a better burn (whether this will be noticable as an overall "improvement" in the bigger scheme of things is a different question). But this needs one to identify the position of the spark gap w.r.t. the injector and install the plug such that the gap faces the injector.

Fancy plugs are relatively useless as far as enhancing power goes.  You might get a tiny bit more, maybe even as much as 2hp.  However, since your car is 6 years old it's fairly likely that new plugs will improve performance.  The more kms it's run, the more improvement you'll see.  The improvement won't be from the new plugs being superior though, it'll be because they're new.  Spark plugs get worn out from the constant sparking and fiery environment inside the engine, so they need to be replaced eventually.

A spoiler is just a decoration on a normal car.  On race cars and powerful sports cars, they help at high speed by providing downforce.  It's like the wing of an airplane, except the force is generated in the opposite direction to hold the car more firmly to the road.  They really only do anything at high speeds.  Also, there's not much value to a rear spoiler on a front wheel drive car even at 200kmph since it only applies extra pressure on the rear wheels.

Thanks Mike. Your explanation were very logical and self explanatory.

Though the car has clocked around 30,000 kms only, will it still make sense to have spark pluck changed?

Generally speaking spark plugs need to be changed once the car crosses 50,000 km. So you still have 20k more to go before the plugs need to be changed. In fact even after that much KMs you can still get away with a simple cleaning (to remove the carbon deposits) and gap readjustment (if at all required) of the plugs if the car is otherwise running fine.

Thanks Rohit,

Truly appreciate your concerns and shall enjoy the car for few months, few long drives, few great memories and shall then think of changing if performance suffers.

If i could be of any help, do let me know.
