There could be very many variables that acted to give the feel of poor brakes, as the members have pointed out.
Have not seen any difference in brake performance between ABS equipped and non equipped cars in terms of regular braking.
The feel of the brakes in ones regular car changes over time and we ourselves without conscious effort tends to modulate the brakes as we drive along. This also might have played a part along with other factors to give that feel of apparent poor braking performance.
