Introduction of permanent user names in the community

I am looking forward for some updates. Good job though.

Sorry, though I knew it would be announced anytime, I missed this thread completely.  I participated yesterday & this/yesterday morning - but somehow couldn't go through the forums - could participate mainly/only in old threads for which I had received email alerts for.

My experience on registration...

• I first tried to register my user name as 'Pankaj Prasad' (same as now) but was not permitted as space isn't allowed (between 2 words/letters). 
• I tried 'pankaj.prasad' (with a dot instead of space - as proposed by default) & was surprised to learn that the same is NOT available - it's already chosen by someone. 
• I also tried 'Pankaj.Prasad' (same as previous but with Ps in capital) but that too is chosen - not really I suppose - but probably not permitted (isn't case sensitive).
• It, however, permitted registration (since done) as 'PankajPrasad' (without space/dot - with Ps in capital).  Well, this too should not have been permitted - as it would now be confusing - 2 members with same name - one with dot & the other without.

I'm curious to know who the other 'Pankaj.Prasad' is.

There is no other pankaj prasad in our forum. It's a messup because of me, while manually creating user-names, probably I ended up assigning your user name to someone else. Will get it rectified first thing in the morning. Your new user name would be Pankaj.Prasad as you want it to be?

Yes, I think 'Pankaj.Prasad' - with a dot - would be better, as it would distinguish the 2 words (name.surname).

Edit: By the way, this incident has brought a couple of queries to my mind.  I'm sure you must have taken care of but still...

• Will it register 2 members with same name - one with dot & the other without (like I just felt/experienced).  It should not, as it would be confusing.  We cannot have 'BinoyThomas' & 'Binoy.Thomas'.
• Is it case sensitive?  We cannot have BLS, Bls, bls, bLs, blS (with or without dot/s).

That was an unglam yet sneaky way of announcing a  major feature launch date...

Yes, it's possible. Unfortunately system won't know whether PankajPrasad and Pankaj.Prasad is same or not. I got your problem but am not sure whether the system is in position to deal with it.

No it's not. BLS, Bls, bLS are all same and system won't allow you to choose another if one is already taken.

Just to clarify - applicable to all... Posts are generally deleted in case of duplication/blank etc.  The post counts come down a little also for the fact that 2 (or more) subsequent posts are merged.

The new user IDs will be displayed w.e.f. 25/12 or a little earlier if everyone registers before that.

That is indeed unfortunate & may cause confusion/problem.  Please see if something can be done about it.

One more question.

The username would be displayed in forum?? but i can't see any change...
