Traffic police during their routine vehicle checking would demand documents like DL, Road Tax, Insurance, PUC certificate, etc., (Mandatory documents under MV Act, to be always kept in your car) Even if any one of these documents is invalid/expired, they would impose a fine.

When involved in an accident with another vehicle :

If one has a valid COMPREHENSIVE insurance cover alongwith all other mandatory docs for your car

     - transportation to the nearest approved service centre & repairs in one's car as well as the other party's vehicle can be claimed

     - in case of injury/death  of both drivers, compensation could be claimed

If one has  a valid THRID PARTY insurance cover which is the minimum requirement under MV Act.

    -  repairs of the other party's vehicle only will be settled by the insurance co.,

    -  in case of injury / death of the other party driver could only be claimed.

Never mind what others say, do whats right for that moment!
