Tyre Air Pressure

Hi All,

I am back from my trip of Delhi to Jallandhar, Jallandhar to Chandigarh, Chandigrah to Jallandhar, Jallandhar to Chandigarh, Chandigrah to Jallandhar  and finally Jallandhar to Delhi.

I clocked 1200 KM last week in my Maruti ZEN (Carb).

One thing I noticed about Air Pressure in all 4 tyres.

I put 30psi Air in all four from Delhi's Petrol pump (as its what suggested by Maruti and here in this forum) before leaving from Delhi. The Car was carring 3 Adults and a Child along with 3 Suitcases on top.

I got very low FE it was approx 13-14 KM/L . (one year back I got 18 KM/L , carring 2 adults 1 chind and 1 small suitcase in boot)

Before leaving from Jallandhar to Chandigrah I stoped my car at a Petrol Pump and asked the Air Filling oprator How much Air you usually put in 145/70 R13 (M. Zen)? He said 32 Psi. I agreed on that and said to put 32 PSi. After this amount of air I felt Smooth Steering and Good FE I calulated its about  17 LM/L, Ya but its true I got little bumpy ride, but its tolerable.

Now I will stick to 32 PSi. If here (forum) any one else how put more than 32Psi in his Zen (145/70 R13)?.

33 PSi in wagonR give me good FE and smooth ride (three adults and 1 kid). Thereby, I am little cautious while going at high speed on highways..

In city, 32 PSi is giving good ride...

Gurpreet  thanks for the update and good to hear that you had a safe trip.

Coming to the issue at hand-there might be a confounding factor somewhere. Either of the pump air pressure gauges might have been wrong or on the return trip the car might have been lighter and also faced less load-like AC usage(as in less).

Hard to fathom a 4kmpl increase in FE with a 2PSI increase in air pressure!!

Suggest If you are driving alone or 2 people keep the recommended PSI.

If 3 or more people with luggage keep 2-3 PSI higher than recommended.

Also hi PSI help to reduce rolling resistance resulting in better FE.

Also if you inflate to much there are chances of tyre burst if hits something on road.

The recommended tyre pressures are well below the danger levels for the tyre. One can inflate to 90% of the max inflation value printed on the sidewall of each tyre.

Infact out in house hyper miler runs his Honda city tyres at almost 50PSI !!

Guys, today a metal strip sheared tube as well tyre on pheriphary.(Tyre teared in 2" length & 1.5" in height line like half square.) when driving to office. Damn, its only 8 months old & i think almost this tyre with tube went off.

Good part is odometers shows 80 when this happens but with my amazing car body balancing is awesome, only noice coming out from rear with steering vibration but car grip on road not altered even. Thanks santro.

My all tyres make is bridgestone. Question : what shall i do? old tyre refurbishment or there is no use of that tyre/tube at all?...

Correction:- all tyres brand is Good Year, not bridgestone..

One more query:- Is wheel alignment required after replacing sparewheel due to puncture?

Go for wheel balancing if you are not sure whether the Spare wheel is balanced or not..  Alignment is generally not required if you don't have any pulling problem. 

Manish, thanks for reply. Sparewheel already balanced & i first time fitted into car. Does anything extra check/care required now?

Yesterday I brought one new Apollo tyre as punctured Goodyear tyre&tubes badly damaged. Should I write to Goodyear/Hyundai for any reimbursement?
