In India there are only two service providers for GPS Maps....

1. Maymyindia

2. Satnav

I have heard about these only...if anyone can name others.

The price starts from 2-3K for software downloads to 20-30K for complete package of gps device as well as software and maps.

Those who claim that they know everything do not know what they dont know.

The two mentioned by Anshu are the only real options for India - none of the SatNav majors have bothered providing any serious map for the country.

Between the two I would prefer SatGuide (not SatNav as mentioned by Anshu - thats the generic term for satellite navigation!) as they seem to respond to complaints and issues and are more proactive.  Their maps are also excellent and they have a decent lineup of maps for metros, big cities and even some secondary towns.  Besides this they have an excellent all-India map for highways and stuff - highly recommended.

Keep those wheels turning!

You should check out MapmyIndia Maps, No other provider is even close to them. Yahoo also uses MMI maps for India and so do a lot of other companies. ( Use Google Baba) and check them out yourself !

MapmyINdia Gps systems use the same Maps as the website , and are far more relaible and robust than anyother player in the country.

Do research before you make your decision.

cheers !

I too read in many forums that SatGuide maps are better and they support Garmin GPS devices. Guys if u have friend in US get the GPS device from there. A decent 3" Garmin GPS device is available for sub 100$ (4700Rs) + 3000(for the maps). Check out www.deals2buy.com for GPS deals , the catch is some one should be able to buy & send it from US to India.

steeroid and kv - why would you recommend satguide over mapmyindia?

mapmyindia comes built in with cars like the ford endeavor and comes as a recommended accessory with cars like chevy cruze - no other product is anywhere near this kind of credibility/acceptance

greencar - you can check out mapmyindia at http://navigator.mapmyindia.com

Rohan, the reason for suggesting satguide over mapmyindia is the compatability factor w.r.t various GPS devices.

Secondly the price factor , Rs 7000 for maps if u already own a Garmin device I felt is rather ridiculous.pls refer to the below link http://navigator.mapmyindia.com/garmin_mmi_map_offer.html

In comparision I heard that Satguide india maps are available(on a SD card) in the range of 2000 ~ 3000 Rs which can be loaded into the GPS device.

Honda Jazz is more expensive than the other cars in its segement, but thats because Honda has a value, to its products and services, so does MapmyIndia, i guess . They have the best Maps and GPS products ! 7000 bucks for maps, sure its steep, but then its worth it... I am sure, MapmyIndia would look at a price reduction soon, as the GPS market in India has picked up and a lot is happening over the small box which helps you find your way !

So does anyone here actually have handson experience with either of these navigation maps?I would like to get some feedback from them as to ease of entering/finding street names, POI and overall GPS signal strength (please specify the model of device using too in this case) within the city. though I do find the India maps little pricey but then if they do not serve the purpose intended, then even a cheap deal is no deal.

On a side note about the map pricing, in US one can get the Garmin with maps for <$100 - which is what probable I will buy and bring next time around if I can get a decent recommendation of Indian maps.

Currently I own a logger (similar to this) and a GPS receiver that can connect to laptop via USB but without map neither are doing me any good (I am looking at selling both and getting Garmin if I can find decent map; anyone interested)? [The logger however is useful for offline tracing the path on Google earth, very cool]

Greencar , since u already have a GPS receiver , why dont u purchase maps for PC and use ur laptop. But frankly its cumbersome to carry a laptop everytime u need maps and a GPS device would definitely be a better option.
