You can consider two options:
1. Buy a used car. Use it for 1-2 years. Then get a new one.
2. Buy a new car.
Both Baleno and Esteem are good cars( was using Esteem for 3years). Really comfortable journey. But if you use it for 1 year, you will not be satisfied with a small car again. The maintainance cost for used cars will be obviously high compared to new ones. But as you are a new driver, you will be comfortable with driving a used car. Even a minor scratch in our new one is a saddening sight for the owner  .
It seems your anticipated usage (~1.5k) demands LPG or diesel. If budget constraints are against going for diesel like Vista or Swift, have a look at LPG models like Wagon R Duo or similar models by other mfgs.
 You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house.
