Is the process of retreading of old tyres advisable. It does saves some money for a long 10-12000kms.

Any insight is welcome.

I strongly recommend not to use re treade tyres. Its always better & safer to put new tyres rather then risking your life.

Please note these tyres are not up to the standered. the suface is hard hence your road grip reduced to an higher extent.

Your car body starts rattling due to hard surface.

from me its NO NO , as I have been victim once of re treaded tyres when I lost my car control on stright wet road.

Jay , I personaly would not suggest you this unless you want to do it for saving some amount of money.

Retreaded tyres are things of past when Taxi drivers used them for their age old Primier Padmini & Amby. Now even they change to new tyres with new age cars so I still prefer to put new set of tyres which is not much expensive in case of MAruti 800 for better ride quality/safty.

But as said if budget is the constraint then its your choice. All the best.

Jay, unless you are a sucker for punishment, your daily run will be <100 km/day.

That is 2k km/mo, assuming only weekdays commute. => 24k km/annum. So a new set is required once every two years (a reasonable 50k km/set is assumed).

A good set of tyres is 10k for 5 tyres (Michelin XM1+, I saw bought on 27/Sep/09) So yearly expenses on the tyres is Rs. 5K.

Assuming ~16 kmpl, you would spend 72k Rs. on Petrol alone. Why are you thinking about the extra 5k, which turns out to be just ~7% of the running costs? If you translate it to expenses per km, it would turn out to be 20p. per km.

If the run is lesser, then the tyres will last you much longer, consequently annual expenses towards tyres will be even less.  Is your life not worth the 10 Rs. daily that is required for a set of tyres in condition?

Why do you want to play with fire?

Please tell us, if you feel it is still justified to retread tyres.

No retreads for front tyres but rear ones will be need to be replenished with a Retreads

even i had my ambys in 1990's retreatds & that too on all four never had any issues with them then so why so much trouble now (i wish not from the rear sets & the spare 5th tyre as a retreaded one)

Meaning you will be buying fresh tyres for the front and then recycling them to the rear ones after retreading, effectively saving 2 to 4 thousand Rs. per year.

Rear will be bumpy and  bouncy because of the tough retreaded tyres. Putting a retread on Amby and putting them on a M800 is certainly different. Amby has leaf springs, and is a heavy vehicle. The inertia of the vehicle itself is responsible for damping out of some road roughness. M800, being a very light vehicle, will not be able to do that.

Enduring bumpy roads year long vs. Rs. 2-4k/annum - You decide. Satish & I rest our case!

i think M800 tyres cost appx 1200 & will last for next 3 to 4 years or atleast 30000kms

Satish, I was talking about the same kind of expenses - Just by habit, I took for example one of the best brands, that costs ~2k bucks, but lasts ~60-70k km at least, if looked after properly.

Jay, whats your opinion?
