Indian fuel efficiency standard to become 18.2kmpl by April 2017

Many countries across the globe have some stringent fuel efficiency guidelines and now  the Indian government will also become a little strict regarding this. They plan to set the fuel efficiency standard to 18.2kmpl by April 2017 and from April 2022, this average limit will shoot up to 22kmpl.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency in India will frame these new standards which will require every manufacturer to produce cars that deliver a fuel economy of 18.2kmpl on an average. However, this doesn't mean that every car will have to deliver a fuel economy of 18.2kmpl or more. According to the new norm, the average fuel economy of all cars in their line-up should be equal to or more than 18.2kmpl. This means a carmaker can sell a vehicle that delivers less than 18.2kmpl, but only when all the models average at 18.2kmpl or above.

With this law in place, manufacturers will have to make their products about 15 per cent more fuel efficient. Carmakers that are unable to get this in place will be charged with heavy penalties. The charge for these penalties and other formalities is yet to be decided by the Government. Nevertheless, with the enhancement in fuel economy of cars then, the fuel savings will rise by a substantial amount. The estimated amount is pegged to be around Rs 90,000 crore a year.

We don't know if the world is coming to an end, but we surely know now that with such fuel efficiency guidelines, the world will hopefully be a better place to live in.
